Katherine Mansfield (1888 – 1923) was born Kathleen Beauchamp in Wellington, New Zealand, and left for London at nineteen. She published In a German Pension (1911), Prelude (1918) and Bliss (1920) before tuberculosis forced the last years in France, Italy and Switzerland. The Garden Party and Other Stories appeared in 1922; she died at Fontainebleau the following January, aged thirty-four, having rewritten the short story in English around a single moment of feeling rather than a plot.
