- The Essays of Michel de Montaigne
Michel Eyquem, seigneur de Montaigne (1533–1592), was born at the château de Montaigne in Périgord, trained as a lawyer and sat in the parlement of Bordeaux before retiring to his tower in 1571 and beginning the essays that made the form. The first two books appeared in 1580, the year he set out through France, Germany and Italy; the third book followed in 1588, with additions to the earlier ones. He served two terms as mayor of Bordeaux, kept his distance from the wars of religion, and died at the château in 1592. “I am myself the matter of my book,” he wrote, and the sentence is the programme.
