Nikolai Gogol (1809 – 1852) was born in the Ukrainian province of Poltava and went to St Petersburg in 1828 hoping for a literary career. Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka, Mirgorod and the Petersburg stories, including The Nose and The Overcoat, made him famous; the comedy The Government Inspector, staged in 1836, made him notorious. The first part of Dead Souls appeared in 1842. He spent his last years in religious anxiety, burned the manuscript of the second part in 1852 and died in Moscow that year, after refusing food.
