René Descartes (1596–1650) was born at La Haye in Touraine, was educated by the Jesuits at La Flèche and took a law degree at Poitiers before serving in the armies of Maurice of Nassau and the Duke of Bavaria. The winter of 1619, when he worked out the foundations of his method, he later described as the turning point of his life. He lived in the Dutch Republic for most of his adult years, published the Discourse on the Method anonymously at Leiden in 1637, and died at Stockholm in 1650, a year after joining the court of Queen Christina.
