Sophocles (c. 496 – c. 406 BC) was an Athenian tragedian who wrote more than a hundred plays, of which seven survive. He won first prize at the City Dionysia more than eighteen times, added a third speaking actor to the stage, and made Oedipus, Antigone and Philoctetes into figures that later European drama has never stopped reworking.
