Thorstein Veblen (1857–1929) was born at Cato, Wisconsin, to Norwegian immigrant farmers and grew up in Minnesota. He studied at Carleton, Johns Hopkins and Yale, spent years without a post, and finally taught at the University of Chicago from 1892, where he edited the Journal of Political Economy. The Theory of the Leisure Class appeared in 1899 and gave the language the phrase conspicuous consumption. He later wrote The Theory of Business Enterprise (1904) and The Higher Learning in America (1918), taught at Stanford, Missouri and the New School, and died in California in 1929.
