- The History of the Peloponnesian War
Thucydides (c. 460 – c. 400 BC) was an Athenian historian and general. Elected strategos in 424 BC, he failed to save Amphipolis, was exiled, and spent the war collecting testimony from both sides. His History breaks off in 411 BC, unfinished, but its method — speeches weighed as evidence, the plague and the stasis at Corcyra told without consolation — is why he could claim his work was a possession for all time rather than a prize essay.
