Walt Whitman (1819 – 1892) was an American poet, journalist and, during the Civil War, a hospital nurse. Leaves of Grass appeared in 1855 as twelve untitled poems, grew through seven editions, and by the deathbed arrangement of 1891–92 had become the single book to which his poems of democracy, the body and the open road all belong.
