Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910) was a count, an artillery officer in the Crimea, a landlord who ran schools for his peasants, and the author of the novels collected here — the largest and the most intimate of the Russian nineteenth-century novels. War and Peace (1869) is the one about the whole country; Anna Karenina (1878) is the one about two marriages.
The Tolstoy novels on this site are free here in EPUB, AZW3 and KEPUB, complete and unabridged, in the standard public-domain English translations: Louise and Aylmer Maude’s revision of 1922 for War and Peace, Constance Garnett’s of 1901 for Anna Karenina. They are long — 580,000 and 350,000 words — and they were written to be read over months, the way their first readers read them in serial parts.
