- The Return of Sherlock Holmes
Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) trained as a doctor in Edinburgh, shipped out as a ship’s surgeon, and invented the most famous character in English fiction between patients in Southsea. Sherlock Holmes appeared in 1887 in A Study in Scarlet; the stories that followed in The Strand Magazine made both of them famous and gave the detective story its template.
