Part I: The Old Buccaneer — I: At the Admiral Benbow
Squire Trelawney, Dr. Livesey, and the rest of these gentlemen having asked me to write down the whole particulars about Treasure Island, from the beginning to the end, keeping nothing back but the bearings of the island, and that only because there is still treasure not yet lifted, I take up my pen in the year of grace 17__ and go back to the time when my father kept the Admiral Benbow inn and the brown old seaman with the sabre cut first took up his lodging under our roof.
I remember him as if it were yesterday, as he came plodding to the inn door, his sea-chest following behind him in a hand-barrow—a tall, strong, heavy, nut-brown man, his tarry pigtail falling over the shoulder of his soiled blue coat, his hands ragged and scarred, with black, broken nails, and the sabre cut across one cheek, a dirty, livid white. I remember him looking round the cover and whistling to himself as he did so, and then breaking out in that old sea-song that he sang so often afterwards:
“Fifteen men on the dead man’s chest—
Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!”
in the high, old tottering voice that seemed to have been tuned and broken at the capstan bars. Then he rapped on the door with a bit of stick like a handspike that he carried, and when my father appeared, called roughly for a glass of rum. This, when it was brought to him, he drank slowly, like a connoisseur, lingering on the taste and still looking about him at the cliffs and up at our signboard.

Serialized in the children’s magazine Young Folks between 1881 and 1882 under the pseudonym Captain George North, Treasure Island is Robert Louis Stevenson’s supreme adventure masterpiece.
This Treasure Island summary and analysis explores its plot, characters, and themes. First published as a book in 1883, it fundamentally shaped the global imagination of pirate lore.
Stevenson single-handedly popularized the defining iconography of maritime piracy: parchment treasure maps with red crosses, tropical maroonings, one-legged buccaneers, talking parrots screeching “pieces of eight,” and the fateful delivery of the dreaded “Black Spot.”
The story begins at the Admiral Benbow inn, where young Jim Hawkins encounters a drunken, scarred old seadog named Billy Bones.
When Bones succumbs to an apoplexy stroke following the delivery of a summons from his old crew, Jim discovers a sealed oilskin packet in the dead man’s sea chest containing a treasure map.
Partnering with the honorable Dr. Livesey and the garrulous Squire Trelawney, the party charters the schooner Hispaniola to recover the buried spoils of the infamous pirate Captain Flint.
However, the voyage is compromised from the start when Trelawney unwittingly hires a crew composed almost entirely of Flint’s former cutthroats.
Hiding inside an apple barrel on deck, Jim overhears the charismatic ship’s cook, Long John Silver, orchestrating a ruthless mutiny to butcher the officers once the gold is secured.
What follows is a brutal battle for survival on the skeleton-shaped island, forcing the young boy to navigate gunfire, jungle ambushes, and precarious moral alliances.
Guided by Jim’s daring recapture of the ship and aided by the half-crazed marooned sailor Ben Gunn, the loyal company outmaneuvers the mutineers, claims the treasure, and sets sail for England, while the cunning Silver slips away into legend.
Treasure Island Key Characters
These are the most memorable Treasure Island characters.
- Jim Hawkins (The Plucky Youth & Bildungsroman Adventurer): An innocent innkeeper’s son thrust into deadly adult perils. Resourceful, daring, and observant, Jim’s journey traces the painful loss of romantic illusions and the transition into practical maturity, heroism, and moral autonomy.
- Long John Silver (The Charismatic Rogue & Dualistic Antihero): Smooth-talking, ruthless, yet genuinely fond of Jim. With his crutch and parrot, Silver shattered simple Victorian moral polarities, establishing the enduring literary archetype of the morally ambiguous, charming villain.
- Captain Smollett (The Stoic Commander & Professional Duty): The shrewd, unsmiling captain of the Hispaniola. Characterized by strict discipline, tactical foresight, and unflinching fidelity to orders, he embodies incorruptible naval duty.
- Dr. Livesey (The Rational Pillar & Enlightened Magistrate): A magistrate and ship doctor who combines cool-headed courage under fire with humanitarian medical ethics, treating wounded mutineers with identical medical honor.
- Squire Trelawney (The Naive Aristocrat & Indiscreet Patron): Impulsive, generous, yet boastfully gullible. His inability to keep secrets enables the pirate infiltration of the ship, demonstrating the dangerous blind spots of privileged social rank.
- Ben Gunn (The Marooned Hermit & Ghostly Wild Card): Abandoned on the island for three years by Flint’s crew, living on salted goat meat and longing for toasted cheese. His eccentric cunning and secret relocation of the gold make him the unexpected savior of the loyal party.
Treasure Island Themes & Historical Significance
These are the central Treasure Island themes.
- The Loss of Romantic Illusion: Stevenson strips the veneer of glamour from nautical life, revealing piracy not as noble rebellion, but as a squalid, treacherous, and alcohol-soaked life driven by violent greed and mutual distrust.
- Moral Ambiguity and Shifting Loyalties: Unlike contemporary didactic children’s literature, the novel refuses easy black-and-white moralizing, presenting characters like Silver who demonstrate both murderous cruelty and genuine human tenderness.
- The Psychological Stain of Greed: Gold in the novel functions as an almost cursed material that brings out base savagery in men, leaving Jim haunted in his dreams by the sound of pounding surf and Silver’s parrot screaming into the dark.
