Mary Shelley (1797–1851) was eighteen when she began Frankenstein, and the book appeared anonymously two years later, in 1818, with a preface by her husband Percy Shelley that many readers took as proof that he had written it. She was the daughter of William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft, and she started the novel in the summer of 1816, when she, Shelley, Byron and Polidori were kept indoors by rain at the Villa Diodati and agreed to write ghost stories.
