Jane Austen (1775-1817) published four novels in her lifetime, all anonymously; Sense and Sensibility appeared in 1811 with the title page credit “By a Lady”. Two more came out after her death. She wrote in the parlour at Chawton, on small sheets of paper, and revised obsessively; the six novels are the most carefully made in English of their period.
The shelf below lists the Austen novels on this site: the first published, the most famous, the most tightly plotted, the last completed, and the late Gothic parody.

What is the best Jane Austen book to start with?
Persuasion (1817): it is the shortest complete work here, at about 5.5 hours.
